Intent
At Northiam C of E Primary School, our children will begin to express their ideas in another language through progressive and purposeful planning. Through the exploration of another culture and language the children will be given another perspective on the world, facilitating their natural curiosity and interest in other languages, laying the foundations for future language learning.
Implementation
The aims of teaching a modern language at Northiam C of E Primary School are to foster an interest in language learning by introducing children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and accessible to all pupils; stimulating and encouraging children’s curiosity about language and creativity in experimenting with it; helping children to develop their awareness of cultural similarities and differences; lay the foundations for future language study by pupils; provide an added perspective on first language teaching and learning; give an extra dimension to teaching and learning across the curriculum.
Modern languages is planned following the broad guidelines set out in the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages. The school’s Scheme of Work ensures that there is continuity and progression in both skills and content across all years.
We follow Primary Languages Network schemes of work for speaking, listening, reading and writing the language. We use interactive resources and native speaker recordings to ensure authentic pronunciation.
Impact
Opportunities to monitor the children’s progress in Primary Languages are built into our programmes of study. Most assessment is formative and is used to support teaching and learning and inform future planning. Assessments are based on observations of children working on different oral activities and (where appropriate) written products.
