Honeybees enjoy a Learning about the letter 'S'

Honeybees has been a buzzing celebration of the letter S, a “sound‑walk” that turned our field into a treasure‑hunt for anything that begins with the s‑sound—from sturdy sticks and soft sighs of the wind to bright signs of spring such as swaying saplings and the first shy squirrels scurrying about, each discovery prompting giggles and “s‑tastic” chants as the children matched the sounds to the objects they found. Building on that momentum, the little learners have been tackling our “Hungry Caterpillar” challenge in the dough area. Our “Math‑Match” adventure has taken the form of a miniature car park: bright toy cars must be steered into the correct numbered spaces, encouraging the children to visualize quantities, practice one‑to‑one correspondence, and even experiment with “symmetric” parking patterns that spark spontaneous geometry talk. Outside, the art station turned into a chem‑lab of colour as the class crunched chalk into fine powder, mixed it with water, and swirled the slurry onto smooth stones, wooden boards and even tyres, discovering how the pigment spreads, dries, and creates shimmering, washable “chalk paint” that they proudly display as the day’s masterpiece.

If you’d like to extend this vibrant learning at home, try a simple “S‑hunt” around your house or garden, collecting everyday objects that start with S and creating a collage or a storybook page; roll out dough or play‑dough and fashion a hungry caterpillar together, counting each segment and adding a tiny fruit or leaf as a snack; set up a mini parking lot on a taped‑out floor using numbered cards and toy cars to reinforce number‑matching, or even create your own chalk paint by crushing sidewalk chalk with a rolling pin, mixing it with a splash of water in a shallow tray, and letting your child paint on a fence, a pot, or a large sheet of paper—each activity mirrors the wonder and discovery that filled our Honeybees classroom, turning everyday moments into joyful, hands‑on learning.
