Copper Beech Class delved into local history with a special visit from Susan Dutfield, who brought a fascinating piece of Northiam’s heritage into the classroom—an old well bucket!

The children were captivated by the wooden and metal construction of the bucket, which sparked lively discussion about how people in the past accessed water. Many were surprised to learn that several homes in Northiam still have wells within them. The class imagined how heavy the bucket would be when full, and how much effort it would have taken to draw water each day.

This hands-on experience helped bring history to life and deepened the children’s appreciation for the ingenuity and resilience of those who lived in our village long ago.
