Phonics & Early Reading

At Northiam, we use the Department of Education approved scheme of Little Wandle for our teaching of phonics. It combines a carefully-structured teaching and learning programme with an engaging reading scheme.

The Litte Wandle journey starts in Nursery with the Foundations programme and continues throughout Reception and KS1 with the School programme. Little Wandle improves progress for all learners.

What is Little Wandle?

Little Wandle is a highly engaging, structured, synthetic phonics programme.

Little Wandle matches the Reception EYFS framework and KS1 Spelling Curriculum. It progresses from simple to more complex phonic knowledge and skills, building on prior knowledge. The main principles of systematic synthetic phonics teaching are followed, allowing children to become confident and successful readers, spellers and writers from a very early stage in their school life.
