Farm School at Northiam

At Northiam C of E Primary school, the Farm school curriculum is developed to support children’s skills in hands-on agricultural and environmental learning experiences, bringing deeper meaning and comprehension to many of our studies in the sciences, including living things, plants , healthy eating and commercial produce. The children actively learn and are engaged with animal husbandry and horticulture.  Children will take part in a range of activities from growing , harvesting,  including visits to our local farms and pick your owns premises. During the colder months the children learn to create products from the farm resources..

In addition to the invaluable experience they’re gaining on the farm, they’re sharing the benefits with the entire school community. The farm is providing a platform for engagement with community groups and parents, the horticultural society, conservation society, school governors are actively included and have become regular volunteers. They discuss crucial topics of food sustainability, nutrition and review and explore the issues and problems that these present. The children develop an understanding of financial awareness as they seek to make a profit from produce and as this develops pupils will explore their experience in contributing to the village life and understanding their role within the wider society.

Through this curriculum it is our intent to provide opportunities for children to develop strong and meaningful experiences, vocabulary and develop their personal and social skills and understanding. The provision allows many opportunities for the children to develop their understanding and use of the British Values.

Friday Focus has an integral application of curriculum subjects to develop  deep, meaningful and inspirational learning. This is underpinned by a challenging sequence of lessons, coherently planned towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge and resulting in deep understanding and application of skills to last a lifetime.
