Copper Beech Class

Welcome to Copper Beech Class! Year 5 & 6

Welcome to our Upper Key Stage 2 class, where we aim to provide memorable final years in primary school at Northiam that help our children to flourish. We focus a lot on developing skills to prepare children for transition towards secondary school at the end of Year 6 so that they are 'secondary ready'. We recognise that these years are an important stage for the children’s learning, social development and positive well-being, and we aim to balance the expectations of work with opportunities for fun.
Our curriculum is broad and dynamic, covering subjects that build upon prior learning and provide stepping stones to secondary school subjects.
In Year 5 we concentrate upon developing independent critical thinking skills to enable children to reflect and evaluate their own work. We support greater autonomy in choosing from a wide variety of books that reflect interests and abilities and can influence written work. We encourage increased independence in recording and presenting ideas across the curriculum. We begin solving mathematical problems with increasingly more challenging multi-step questions that will require resilience, adaptability and determination.
In Year 6 time is given to helping children make increasing decisions about their own learning styles and presentation. Time is spent preparing the children for Year 6 SATs tests in May, but this is balanced with opportunities for creativity and breadth of learning in other subjects.
Highlights of Upper Key Stage 2 include taking on responsibilities such as being a Play Leader, joining the Courage Squad or Animal Squad and participating in a residential trip. There are also increasing enrichment opportunities for all children, including numerous sporting opportunities and competitions, Bikeability courses and community activities.
We aim for all children to be able to demonstrate our school values throughout their time in Upper Key Stage 2 and to value the abundance of opportunities on offer to them through:

  • Trust
  • Thankfulness
  • Humility
  • Courage
  • Compassion
  • Fellowship
