There are five qualified ‘Full First Aiders’ and two qualified ‘Paediatric First Aiders’ on staff at our school. If a child sustains an accident, the following procedure takes place:
If the accident is minor, the appropriate first aid is administered and the child returns to class.
If it is thought that the accident is more serious, parents and carers are contacted so that they can arrange for the child to see a doctor. If the parent cannot be reached, the Head Teacher assumes responsibility for the child. This would normally mean an ambulance being called to the school, if deemed serious enough to warrant this action.
If a child receives ANY bump to the head, a phone call to alert the parent of the incident and a letter is sent home with him/her to the parents and carers to remind them about the possibility of delayed reactions.
If a child is sick or has diarrhoea they are required to stay off school for 48 hours after the last incident occurred.
All accidents in school are recorded in the Accident Book. If a child is taken ill at school, parents and carers are contacted with a view to him/her being taken home. It is most important that we are informed of any change of address or telephone numbers. We keep a file index of information which will enable us to contact parents and carers during the day if necessary and it is essential that this is kept up-to-date.
